The President’s House memorial on Independence Mall hosts an outdoor exhibit on the 9 people that Washington enslaved while living there as president. Exploring the contradictions between the pursuit of liberty and the institution of slavery was determined by the current federal administration to be “unfairly disparaging” and the exhibit was removed with no warning at the end of January. Matt found the text of the panels and has organized a band of volunteers to stand on site and read the text so passersby understand the full context. (www.oldcityremembers.com) While a judge ruled the panels must be put back (yay!) there’s a long legal battle ahead, and in the meantime, a dedicated group of people to keep the story alive.
